since jan 2026 not really working anymore.. most of the time just stays blank.. great "improvement"!
The tag I used before, the DEPRECATED Tag Assistant Legacy, was excellent. But now it is repeatedly causing problems on my WordPress website. Even after installing the code correctly multiple times, it shows "Code not found" when I go to preview mode. I cannot find a solution to this problem.?????????????????????????????
Terrible for memory usage. If you go to chrome://discards/ you'll see that when this extension is enabled, Chrome can't discard/sleep tabs anymore, so tabs can't become inactive and having lots of tabs opens means Chrome turns into a giant memory leak.
???? So is it installed or what?
Breaks tag assistant when running preview from tag manager and when it "works" it alwas says that the tag isn't installed. So it never works ...
Google managed to turn a once flawless and functional system into a bizarre endless loop of so-called ‘improvements’ that drain our time, money, and sanity. Tag Assistant is just the cherry on this multi-layered disaster cake. Most recently, several of my cleaning product ads were magically classified as tobacco products — I was told to ‘fix’ them, resubmit for review… only to be rejected again hours later as tobacco. I don’t sell tobacco, I don’t even mention tobacco anywhere, yet the algorithm runs its own absurd loop. And so it goes on: new rules, new glitches, new fixes, new rejections… over and over again...
So unbelievably confusing how to set this up. I have the tag in the right place but there are so many pop ups and weird errors it makes no sense. Could have made this 10x easier by simply watching a customer try to figure this out and then making it easier.
Brakes preview mode for GTM, which took me three days to figure out. The connection fails with the extension on. Just unbeliavable. If you need it, install it, use it and delete it.
This needs to prompt before reloading the page when activated. Conversion pages are typically one-time views.
Does not work. Always says there are no tags installed on every website. Useless.
Doesn't work, be trying to sort this for 4 hrs, been on the phone and still not working, i wouldn't bother wasting your time.
Go figure something else from Google not working properly.
Not working anymore.
Stop working after the latest version release. Google please test your products before releasing!
It stopped working after my Chrome updated to version 137.0.7151.55. It was still functioning properly on version 136.0.7103.113.
Google Tag Assistant is extremely buggy and unreliable. It often behaves inconsistently—sometimes tags are installed correctly, but it still reports that no tags are present. Please consider copying Meta Pixel Helper or TikTok Pixel Helper, which are much easier to use and significantly less buggy.
It has not been working properly for two weeks. I've tried to fix it, but it doesn't help. We've also tried it on two different computers. Please fix this issue.
Doesn't work as expected. When auditing a conversion assigned to a form submit -- let's say -- most times, a webpage refreshes/redirects, but the tag assistant does not persist conversion data, meaning, the conversion may flash on the screen, but then quickly disappears. Data would need to be cached/persisted to maintain the conversion tag when/while using the tag assistant. Otherwise, in most cases, it will be impossible to use. In its current state, it's only useful when a conversion happens when there is no redirect or page refresh.
Still seems to be broken

Until Tag Assistant was updated, I had no problems in Preview mode for Google Tag Manager. With Tag Assistant enabled, Preview mode cannot start. It only works if I disable Tag Assistant, yet GTM Preview mode shows the message "For an improved debugging experience for untagged pages, install the Tag Assistant browser extension." Please fix this!
WHY DID YOU UPDATE THIS???? It was soo good before. We already have your "modern" tag assistant extension. The legacy version is for the people who just want quick and accurate data, without the gimmicks and extra steps.
Completely worthless now. New UI absolutely sucks and it's so buggy now. Most of the time when you click it open, it comes up with 'No Tags Found' and then you click it again and lo and behold, there are the tags. You "saved it" or brought it back worse than ever, Google.
If I could give zero stars, I would. The new version is completely useless compared to the old one, which was much more helpful and detailed when checking tags. This update feels like a downgrade and has significantly reduced its usefulness. please revert to old version!
This update is objectively worse since functionality from the original Tag Assistant (tag recording, being able to see Google Ads tags, etc) has been removed. This one is also significantly slower and buggier, since I now often have to refresh the page in order for it to detect anything, and instead of instantly detecting anything, I also now have to wait for the extension to check. Bring back all the old, actually useful functionality instead of whatever this has become now. Nobody wanted this.
The last 2 updates broke the functionality of a perfect tool that I've been using for many years. Since Tag Assistant was updated in late December 2024, I lost the ability to see SPA pages developed in vue.js in Google Tag Manager's Preview Mode. Please revert to the old version and stop breaking things, Google. We are trying to do some work here while you are breaking our tools and taking away functionality.
New update is worthless, please bring back the old version which worked perfectly!
this new version is worthless. Please read all these recent reviews and bring back the extension that had value.
The old version was extremely helpful when it came to identifying specific Google Ad, Floodlights, etc. The new version is completely useless. It doesn't maintain any of the useful features of the original. Can you just bring the old version back?
What they promise in the description ("This advanced tool allows you to debug your website, including iframes, within a single session, providing detailed diagnostics to help you validate, diagnose, and resolve your implementation.") is not true anymore, unfortunately. This Tag Assistant plugin is not working anymore since the recent update. We'd been using it to debug our websites that had two GTM containers (one embedded directly, one via iframe). Now this plugin fails to identify any GTM and claims there is none which makes it impossible to debug . This needs to be fixed.
How to use, i have no idea. Already adding the gtag on the project but never saw this tool able to detect the tag. Even i type 'gtag' on the console it did return me the gtag functions.
Bad UI/UX, Old is gold.
Broken, broken, broken. Downloaded the new Tag Assistant Companion plugin after this plugin was considered "deprecated," and found that the new Tag Assistant Companion plugin would constantly fail to identify GTMs properly, even though the old deprecated plugin worked just fine. Now it looks like Google had the bright idea to combine the plugins (can't imagine why, the feedback for the new plugin was so great!) and in the process, broke the old plugin as well. Now Google has two official plugins that don't work worth a damn. Claims there's no GTM present, however, inspecting the code on the website and looking in our Google Tag Manager shows that the tag is present and firing. Nice job, Google!
We used to debug pages with an GTM in the iframe and another in the parent with the (deprecated) plugin enabled. For debugging we just opened the parent page and both GTMs showed up pefectly fine. With the recent update, this is gone and is making my work almost impossible at the moment. The deprecated plugin versions worked just great. Please have a look at this: Update (22.01.25): There might be a workaround: https://support.google.com/tagmanager/thread/318953291/preview-debugging-setup-with-directly-embeed-and-iframe-tag-assistant-extension?hl=en&sjid=16692549679273677765-EU
What is the use of the new version? I need to see the details of my installation code. This new version is useless. Please switch back to the old version.
Please revert to the old version, the new version isn't compatible with Shopify, and is useless compared to the old version.
The new version is useless, please revert to old version !
After update not working in Opera Browser... It's nice that the plugin is back, but Opera doesn't have a sidebar which won't open.
Why have you updated the tool, the old version worked fine LOL. Standard Google of updating stuff that doesnt needs updating!
This update is completely rubbish, please revert to old version!!!
This update is completely rubbish, please revert to old version!!!
Buggy as now, please revert or do better.
WHY ruin this excellent tool? Even though it was 'deprecated' it still served its purpose quickly and easily to determine Google tags and conversions firing on the page. This reworked version makes you jump through hoops to find what was immediately available in the original version like the Google Ads conversion label. Bring back the original please! If I wanted to run the GTM debug window I already had access to it. With the reworked tool it's now easier to search for the conversion in Chrome dev tools, which negates the purpose of having the once handy Tag Assistant extension. No reason to force a side panel when the dropdown window gave more information in the first place.
Please note, the deprecated extension was much more helpful and this new update has absolutely butchered its functionality while being more faulty now than ever. Please revert it back if you can.
zero!
Please Update GA4 Tag on this extension its show Globle Site Tag. for client satisfaction we need this
Google Tag Manager provides an 8-digit ID in the format GTM-XXXXXXXX. Unfortunately, Google Tag Manager Debugger and Google Tag Assistant only support 7-digit IDs. As a result, we are facing difficulties in utilizing Google Tag Manager effectively, and we are unable to set up and verify other events using these tools. This limitation hinders our ability to fully utilize the potential of Google Tag Manager and impacts our ability to track and manage events accurately. We hope that future updates or improvements to these tools will resolve this issue and allow us to make the most out of Google Tag Manager for our website's analytics and tracking needs.
Bug report: This extension attempts to read document.body.nodeName, which is not guaranteed to exist. This pollutes my console with tons of errors on sites that have a null value for document.body. Also, the support forum link on this Chrome Web Store entry goes to a dead page.
For some reason this ext blocks videos playing from BBC news
Not working. After recording and uploading report, I am trap in signing in GA account.
