Description
ConDic - AI-Powered Context Dictionary for Web & YouTube
Look up word definitions instantly on any webpage with a double-click. Unlike traditional dictionaries that give you a list of generic meanings, ConDic uses AI to understand the surrounding context and delivers the one definition that actually fits how the word is being used right now.
On YouTube, enable subtitles and press Space to get instant vocabulary breakdowns of every subtitle on screen. Navigate words with your keyboard, tap to see definitions, and build your vocabulary while you watch.
== HOW IT WORKS ==
On Any Webpage:
Select any word by double-clicking or highlighting it.
A small ConDic icon appears near your selection.
Click the icon to get an AI-generated definition based on the sentence and paragraph the word appears in.
The definition box appears inline, right where you're reading. Press Escape to dismiss.
On YouTube Videos:
Open any YouTube video and turn on subtitles (CC).
ConDic will ask if you'd like to enable word learning for the video. Click "Enable" to activate.
While the video is playing, press Space at any time.
The current subtitle is analysed and key vocabulary words appear as clickable chips.
Click any word or use keyboard navigation (Left/Right arrows to browse, Enter to select) to see its definition in context.
Press Space or Escape to close the vocabulary panel and continue watching.
Every word you look up is saved to your personal vocabulary dashboard, so you can review and track your learning progress over time.
== KEY FEATURES ==
Context-Aware Definitions
ConDic does not just look up a word in a static dictionary. It sends the surrounding text as context to an AI model that determines the exact meaning based on how the word is being used. The word "bank" in "river bank" gives you a completely different definition than "bank" in "bank account." This is the core difference between ConDic and every other dictionary extension.
Works on Every Website
The extension works across all websites. Read a news article, a research paper, a blog post, or documentation. Double-click any unfamiliar word and get a clear, contextual definition without leaving the page.
YouTube Subtitle Vocabulary
When watching YouTube videos with subtitles enabled, ConDic can extract vocabulary from the subtitles in real time. Press Space while the video is playing to see definitions for words in the current subtitle line. This is ideal for language learners watching content in a second language, or anyone encountering unfamiliar terms in educational videos, lectures, or podcasts.
Keyboard Navigation
The YouTube vocabulary widget is fully keyboard-accessible:
Left/Right Arrow keys to move between words
Enter to view the definition of the selected word
Space or Escape to close the widget
This lets you stay in flow without reaching for the mouse.
Vocabulary Tracking & Dashboard
Sign in with your Google account to save every word you look up. Visit your personal dashboard at condic.xyz to review your vocabulary history. See which words you've looked up, when you looked them up, and in what context. This makes ConDic more than a dictionary. It becomes a vocabulary-building tool.
Offline Caching
Definitions you've already looked up are cached locally on your device. If you encounter the same word again, the definition loads instantly without making another network request. The cache holds up to 5,000 entries and automatically removes old entries after 30 days.
Clean, Non-Intrusive UI
ConDic's interface is minimal and stays out of your way. The definition popup appears near your cursor and dismisses easily. On YouTube, the vocabulary panel overlays the video player cleanly. All UI elements use a dark theme designed to blend with modern websites and avoid visual disruption.
Error Handling & Reliability
Network requests include automatic retry with exponential backoff. If the API is temporarily unavailable, ConDic retries intelligently without flooding the server. Rate limits are respected, and quota exceeded states are communicated clearly through a user-friendly dialog rather than silent failures.
== GETTING STARTED ==
Install ConDic from the Chrome Web Store.
Visit any webpage and double-click a word to try your first lookup.
To use the YouTube feature, go to any YouTube video, enable subtitles (CC), and press Space while the video plays.
Sign in with Google (via the extension popup) to enable vocabulary tracking and access your dashboard at condic.xyz.
== PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED ==
ConDic requests the following permissions, each for a specific purpose:
Access to all websites (content scripts on all URLs):
ConDic needs to run on every webpage so you can look up words wherever you're reading. The extension only activates when you interact with it (double-click a word or press Space on YouTube). It does not read, collect, or transmit any page content in the background. The only data sent to the ConDic API is: (a) the word you selected, (b) the surrounding sentence or paragraph for context, and (c) on YouTube, the current subtitle text.
Cookies:
Used solely to read the authentication session cookie from condic.xyz. This allows the extension to verify whether you're signed in so it can associate word lookups with your account for vocabulary tracking. No other cookies from any other website are accessed.
Host permissions for condic.xyz:
Required to read the authentication cookie from the condic.xyz domain. This is the only domain where cookies are accessed.
== DATA & PRIVACY ==
ConDic is designed with user privacy in mind:
No background data collection: The extension only sends data to the ConDic API when you explicitly trigger a word lookup (by clicking the icon or pressing Space on YouTube).
What data is sent: The selected word, surrounding context text (the sentence or paragraph), and on YouTube, the current subtitle text and video metadata (title, channel, language).
What data is stored locally: Definition cache entries in your browser's localStorage. These are automatically purged after 30 days.
What data is stored on the server: If you're signed in, your looked-up words and their contexts are saved to your account for vocabulary tracking. You can review this data on your dashboard at condic.xyz.
No third-party analytics or tracking scripts: ConDic does not include any analytics SDKs, tracking pixels, or third-party scripts.
No data selling: Your data is never sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising.
For full details, see our Privacy Policy at https://condic.xyz/privacy.
