Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader

Does not work. When I hit play it scrolls all the way to the end and it reads the last 2 sentences. Does not start from the beginning. Upon hitting play, it glitches and automatically scrolls all the way to the bottom.

Ms. AI, do you have any questions for me? You told your company that your Read Aloud has bugs and I need to remove and reinstall it to speak Cantonese. One of them is troubleshooting.

Doesn't work. Requires paid google voice for those options and using the generic read aloud voice doesn't work with 'Unrecognized Language En' Trying elsewhere.

It's really bad. It struggles to open and work. It is SO slow an un-responsive.

I HATE how robotic it sounds, it makes it very difficult to process information. It also makes sentences sound like run-ons making it even worse

It sounds so mechanical and no intonation. Messages do not go into my head as it speaks so monotonous.

I was using it but it suddenly stopped working. This happened to both Google accounts. It kept showing "Loading". It is very annoying. Even remove it and then add it again, it's just loading, not working at all

Could be a lot better. It is as basic as a TTS extension can get. Either use an ugly popup window, or right click selected text and use the context menu. No faster left-click button options. No shortcut hotkeys. Other extensions show the various blocks of text you can select and left-clicking will automatically select that highlighted block. But on this extension, you have to click and drag your mouse to select an area. It's okay if you just want something basic, but I'm looking for something with more polish and more features.

Horrible! Uses zero recognition of grammar and punctuation. Reads everything (regardless of speed setting) as one long run on sentence, making it impossible to follow or comprehend the material.

What has happened to my beloved read aloud?! I used to use this all the time, for just about everything. Now it reads a couple words and shuts down. Sure, it tells you to change voices and try again, but from what I've worked out it does this with every voice. Bummer. This was my most trusted add on to help me read pages that my old eyes are too tired to squint at any more. Super bummed. Please, please developer, consider fixing this issue.

This extensions used to be good, but now it is horrendous. Constantly requiring to grant permission from Google to read. Sometime the extensions stucked in a loop where even afer following the instruction on the google site to grant permisison, it asked for permission again. Absolute trash now.

The quality as poor as I'd rather to read it myself.

I was using this extension without realizing that it collects sensitive information like passwords, credentials, security question, or personal identification number (PIN) among others. I would stay away from these.

Not working. Thank you @Sophie Weber for recommending: Riddr. Riddr works great, and unlike Speechify it is free.

Just like many of the previous reviews from this past week: the extension suddenly stopped working entirely. It reads the first sentence then loads and loads, repeating the sentence a few times. Very disappointing. I hope this issue is fixed bc I refuse to pay for speechify lol.

Omg help I use this in all my college classes and it does not work anymore. Only reads the first couple of words. I really like this and I don't want to let go of it!

I agree with the other reviewers just the first line repeated 2 or 3 times there i was thinking it was something I'd done wrong. Please fix it I've used it for many years and I'm the missing it loads. it's the best extension of it's kind...

Does not work correctly as of April 17th. Repeats the first few words three times then stops, no matter what page I'm on.

Just downloaded it, my recommendation will be that the text highlighting should be for the actual page.

As someone with difficulty reading and even more so as a student, I added this extension because it is the only text to speech application that WW Norton allows. The robotic voices are TERRIBLE and very hard to concentrate on. I tried going through the process of purchasing a monthly subscription or even a 1 time fee of a certain voice that would make the listening/reading process more efficient but the process is not easy and they don't provide you with a set price prior to asking for your credit/debit card information. This has been very frustrating for someone who wants to get an education and has learning difficulties. Don't download this extension if you have these kinds of obstacles.

It's not reading the full pdf I selected, it has the super robotic voice that can't pronounce a lot of common words.

This has stopped working and has timed out, can someone who created this please go into the app and figure out what is wrong with it please?

Not working for me either as of 3/24/25, getting this error: "The extensions gallery cannot be scripted" (I'm not scripting this extension). I also noticed, it was functioning oddly for the past week or 2 (repeating the same line, dying half way through). Prior to all of this, I LOVED the extension. I'll change my rating once it's fixed.

Not working anymore

(Broken Again) I use this nearly every day, but lately, the voice just stops before reading a single full sentence. It gives the Error of "Timeout, TTS never started, try picking another voice?" but it's the same voice i have been used the entire time. and it does the same when i click on the "Test" button

I've been SpeakIt user since 2012. Apparently the developer decided to rebrand the extension, and in doing so changed the extension icon. In all of the confusion, I started looking for a new text to speech extension, and I installed this extension. My genuine experience is that this extension is terrible, I still can't understand how this it has 6,000,000 users.... Anyway, long story short, I figured out that SpeakIt has been rebranded into Riddr, same developer, brand new extension works like a charm, don't like the icon but it is worth checking it out tho.
