I loved this app... until I tried exporting documents to DOCX. Any italicized text was removed. Several paragraphs at the end of the documents were removed. Extra line breaks were added all over the place. I don't know what the deal is, but this makes it unusable. I need to be able to get the docs out of Calmly and into something else. I'll have to look elsewhere.
It's a decent app, but it deserves one start because of the $5 price. Very basic. There are free apps that do the same and more. Also this app appears to be abandoned. Hasn't been updated in almost 2 years. I recommend trying Wavemaker. It's free, has way more features, and is actively being developed.
It would have been the perfect tool, for distraction free writing and mark up. Here is why it isn't: The export of documents in any format is broken. I use a Chromebook. Calmly Writer exports always in html-file code. No matter, what I choose: markup, plaintext, docx. That's very sad for me. Calmly Writer is the onle truly distraction free tool on Chrome Webstore. All the other tools, don't understand, what that means. You see word counts, and scrollbars. Hopefully Google will put a button for fullscreen distraction free writing to Google Docs. Or maybe the developers from Calmly Writer will update this issue. I only give one star, because of this problem and my hope, the developers will recognize it and fix this problem. If so, I'll get back here and change my review.
GREAT APP. Just, you know, saving isn't working, so don't actually do work in it. It doesn't matter if I'm online or offline - I get the green "SAVING" in the upper right corner, but nothing is actually saved. I have again lost most of a morning's work that I now need to go recreate. It is a beautiful app, great markdown support, just a shame it doesn't function as anything more than a blackhole for your words.
I'm disappointed in this application, nobody helped me with my issue. I lost all my files, and there were no way I could have them again. The developers don't answer and they left you with no solution.
HORRIBLE
I loved this app, but I'm not ablt to buy it, the button is disabled, and have an annoying notification on left-bottom telling to buy it to remove it.
need more screen and text color selections. how about green on black, like the old monochrome monitors. menu selections very skimpy. price not important. I don't mind paying when it's done well.
I used to love this app. I bought it but now it's not syncing like it used to. I write at home and write at work and it used to sync and save. Now, it does not do that at all, and I can't get the Google Drive files to open in Calmly either. This is such a perfect, basic software. I hope this is resolved soon.
I bought this specifically for offline use. It doesn't do that. Files saved as 'Calmly' files disappear and I am unable to locate them. I have also tried saving them as Markdown Files and Word files. These too disappear. The app looks nice. I enjoy using it and the typewriter sounds help me get into the zone. But that's not the reason why I bought it. I bought it to write offline and this is not happening. Can we get this fixed please.
The free version has an annoying "pay me" message that is very distracting. renders the app useless.
Not very dyslexic friendly. I certainly need other backgrounds than black and white and grammar / spelling check would be helpful too.
Calmly Writer (CW) is a clean, bare bones word editor that looks fresh and - yes - helps keep you focused on writing. There are a few tools to make your experience pleasant, such as light-on-dark. The feature set is decidedly sparse, which is both advantageous and problematic. One of the advantages is that you don't have to think about much. You simply load the app, start a new file or load an old one, and have at it. There is so little UI that you don't even think about playing around with formatting - which is an Oooh, Shiny for me. Unfortunately, your work is at risk. CW relies on cloud sync to store your data. I've had multiple occasions where the syncs were not successful, only to find out later when half my work is missing (there is no message to alert the user). The final straw for me was losing ALL my CW files in one fell swoop, with no easy way to restore them on the machine. (Ironically, they're available on another machine.) Export is barely functional. Files simply don't load correctly in companion applications, such as MS Word or gDocs. I've found that copying and pasting text is the most efficient process for exporting data - which is backwards. I've been using CW for several months now. I've written many speeches, short stories, poems, and parts of novels using this app. Aside from the cloud sync problem, the benefits far outweigh the issues. As a writing app, it can't be beat. I'm just not sure I can get past the save fails anymore.
Love the app, lately (the past few months) I've been unable to launch it. The app will open, as in I can see the icon in the task bar, but I'm unable to pull up the actual page. I love the app though, and would love to be able to use it again.
Needs a First Line Indentation feature which is almost an essential requirement of an editor for fiction writing. If it had that, I would purchase it but, sadly...
This used to be my favorite writing app when I was only using one computer, but now I have a home and word computer to sync between, and it just doesn't sync fully. I'll write something on my home computer, and then when I access the cloud file, still in the program, from my work computer, some changes I made would appear, but others would not. When I save files to my computer, I am unable to open them, even with the Calmly program. Also, occasionally I'll hit CTRL+Z to undo something, and it will delete the entire paragraph I was working within. CTRL+Y to redo the change does not bring the content back, and it will either be lost, or I will have to retrieve it from a previous version I might have luckily saved elsewhere. Overall, the app is inexpensive, beautiful, and generally easy to work with.
Clean and minimalist, exactly what I was looking for, but some of the buttons don't quite explain what they do, and how they do it. The taskbar that comes up is a great example. *edit The program hung on me, couldn't open, and when I reinstalled it, all my files were gone, definitely something to work on.
It's fine as long as you don't mind emailing what you've written to yourself at the end of every session. Sync doesn't work, and when the program hung endlessly, I uninstalled and reinstalled and all my files had disappeared. They are not in the trash, they are not in the activity stream, they are not in Recent. They are just gone. What kind of program doesn't leave created files behind when it uninstalls itself? Gross oversight. Very disappointed, as it was the outline for a story and I'm on a pretty tight deadline. I'm going to try Writerly instead, or go back to Google Docs.
This app is fantastic in theory. A minimalistic, offline supported writing app is exactly what I needed. The problem comes in both the file formats (what it saves in and what it can export to) and the auto-cloud saving. It would be great it if auto-saved to my specific cloud storage (specifically Google Drive) as well as had more font/text options. Aside from that, it's my go-to writing program at the moment for Chromebook. Edit: It also really needs a "recent files" load, or an explanation of WHERE the cloud files are saving.
The design of this is brilliant and I want to have it become my go to place to write when I'm on a computer, but with the lacking exporting formats I can't rely on it at all at the moment. Or are there functions in the purchased edition I don't know about? Would like to see at least .pdf .doc
I really like this app, but it does need some more advanced formatting options - such as being able to indent, and centre text.
Calmly Writer needs to simply save directly to Google Drive in a non-proprietary file type to be a 5-star app.
Google Drive sync is very unreliable. Does not sync at all when using Chromium (due to a bug in Chromium), and unreliable when using an official Chrome release. Content seems to be stored in Drive correctly, but updates synced from Drive are not properly applied to the local copy (although the debug log shows that they are being retrieved) - instead, an older (local) version of the document is used. This older content is then saved on Drive, next time Calmly syncs, overwriting any previous changes that were present in Drive. Also badly needs a sans-serif font option; serif fonts aren't the nicest to look at for long periods on a low-dpi screen.
I wanted a better markdown editor and this is not it. When you export the file it includes a lot of "calmly writer" specific information that essentially makes exporting markdown as anything, even plain text, useless. It's a shame, cause I love the GUI.
Needs work as for right now this will never replace MS Word. Saving compositions is easy enough but things like margins, indentations and other basic necessities when writing are lost requiring me to edit my document from scratch before I write further. This app is good for making lists for groceries and menial items you need to store information on, but something like writing a short story will only make you want to delete this.
Calmly looks great, but it would be way better if you had the option to sync your work across devices by linking it to your Google Plus account.
Really nice, simple way to write. However, really poor import and export possibilities, no way to close the app in fullscreen mode, cannot set to always start with maximized/fullscreen window.
